These days every morning newspaper seems to be a collage of controversies, breaking and shattering and cracking news and some billion dollar acquisition. While this has been going on for a while what has recently brewed is the tussle between the self crowned czar of cricket and one of the most polished Indian politician in recent times.
While the czar doesn’t shy away from the theory of ‘if you have it you flaunt it’, the politician prefers using the power of words and the delicacy of style to pave his way through. It comes as no surprise that both men of power have their camps backing them and groups ready to take them down at the next red light. While the politician has stepped down, the other is still fighting for what he believes is his creation. To a great extent many of us will agree that what he has brought to cricket in today’s time, few could have. But is that a pass for pseudo dictatorship? I leave that as an open ended line.

What amazes me is the fact that a game which a country loved and still does seems to have morphed into a playing ground for the rich and famous. Fancy parties, mega million dollar marketing campaigns and the glam brigade of the Indian film industry seem to have descended on this platform as friends, foes and even stake holders with the hope of personal glory at the end of the road. The adrenaline pumping high from watching the ball fly across the line and the sudden cramp on watching ‘God’ walk back scoring in single digits are still very much there but it makes me wonder if the game is driving the high or the package the game comes in.
Personally I was never a sports fanatic but when sports news migrates from the last page to a lead story in every daily and magazine, its news that you can’t miss. What the outcome is going to be of the present controversy, few know but what remains is that now cricket is much more than a sport and a religion in India. It’s an amalgamation of money, power, famous names and a high yielding business.
No better way to conclude than with a line from Queen, ‘No time for losers 'Cause we are the champions - of the world.’
