More than $10 billion in investments, over 5 years in the making and after more than 2 years in launch delay, The Boeing Dreamliner finally made its maiden flight on December 15th, 2009. It’s a mid-sized, wide-body jet with seating capacities ranging from 210 to 330 people with model varieties of 787-3/8/9 and a future 787-10.

According to its ambitious makers, Boeing, the aircraft is supposed to be the company’s most fuel efficient carrier and heavy on usage of composite materials which makes it light weight and thus very cost effective for airlines. With over 830 orders already placed, it’s the fastest selling wide-body in the airliner history and has already made Boeing over $140 billion even before the first commercial flight has taken off. It is very popular amongst airlines that want mid-sized planes to carry for very long distances loads of around 250 people.

While the first images of the interiors seem very pleasing and interesting with focus on traveler comfort such as increased cabin pressure etc, there seems to be a lot of study and research gone into seating structures and space varieties in the models such as 3+3+3 seating. However, it’s still more than a year away from the first delivery of the Dreamliner to Japan’s All Nippon Airways so you will have to wait quite a while before it hits Indian skies. Here’s to waiting for the dream.
